South Dakota residents have about a week left to comment on a draft explanation for a proposed initiated measure regarding property tax assessments.
Attorney General Marty Jackley released the draft explanation Oct. 21, and South Dakotans have until close of business on Oct. 31 to comment.
The proposed measure limits property tax assessment increases of all non-agricultural land to no more than 2.5 percent of a base amount.
If approved, the proposal would appear on the 2026 general election ballot. The new tax assessment limits would start with the 2027 assessment.
The initiated measure requires 17,509 valid petition signatures to qualify for the 2026 general election ballot.
