The Spearfish Community Foundation grants $30,000 to the city for a new skate park.
Crews start construction on the 8,800-square-foot facility at Spartan Park this spring, city parks and rec officials say.
It’ll replace the former skate park near Spearfish High School. The school needed the space for construction of it’s new Career and Technical Education building.
“We appreciate the Spearfish Community Foundation’s support on this project,” Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Ehnes said. “The new skate park will be an amenity for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Kari Engen, Spearfish Community Foundation grants coordinator, explained how the foundation awards grants.
“Our vision is to impact the quality of life within the community,” she said. “The skate park project will encourage youth to develop healthy, active lifestyles and provides an outdoor gathering space for skaters, friends, and families.”
“The completion of the project will give an opportunity for skaters of all ages to build connections and a sense of community,” Engen said. “It's a place to experience accomplishments, build confidence, practice skills, and enjoy a day of outdoor recreation.”
The new skate park opens later this summer. The Spearfish Community Foundation formally presented the grant to the Spearfish City Council during its meeting on Feb. 18.
