South Dakota gas prices decline, remain lower year-to-year

South Dakota’s gas prices are dropping slightly and remain sharply lower than they were a year ago, according to a new report.

The average price for a gallon of gas fell two cents to $2.99, GasBuddy reports.

That’s about a dime higher than a month ago, but it’s about 35 cents cheaper than this time last year.

South Dakota remains cheaper than the national average, which is around $3.13. The average national price of diesel fell a nickel to $3.54.

Analysts say while they expect prices to continue trending lower, any abrupt change in the tariff situation could bring that decline to a halt.

"For now, the good news is that gas prices typically reach their yearly peak around April 10, so we may have already witnessed 'peak pain' at the pump for 2025," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy "As refiners near the end of seasonal maintenance and supply begins to rise — and with the changeover to summer gasoline nearly complete — it's increasingly likely that gas prices have already hit their high for the year."
