South Dakota to receive millions as part of Purdue Pharma settlement

SDPB

South Dakota is expected to receive more than $10 million as part of a settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, according to Attorney General Marty Jackley.

The $7.4 billion settlement ends the litigation against the company for its role in fueling the opioid crisis.

“South Dakota families have suffered because of this company’s involvement in the opioid drug crisis,” said Jackley. “The funds are important, but no amount of money will ever compensate families for the pain they have suffered watching loved ones deal with opioid abuse.”

Jackley said South Dakota’s share will be paid over a 15-year period. The payments go to the National Opioid Settlement Fund administered by the state Department of Social Services.

The $10.1 million—along with another $54 million the state has received in opioid settlements—will be used for addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery.
