Including Unmarried Women in the Homestead Act of 1862
This one-hour program will be about 45 minutes of a lecture provided by USD Professor Hannah Haksgaard. Followed by a discussion and Q&A period. The talk will cover Hannah's research into why congress allowed single women to claim homesteads. It is a fascinating history that connects women's rights, land ownership, and the statutory process.
This program is funded by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
