Authorities have confirmed human remains found in eastern South Dakota belong to a Woonsocket man reported missing almost exactly three years ago.

Eugene Prins, 45, was last seen on March 26, 2020.

Skeletal remains were found in a rural area near Woonsocket in August of 2022, according to Sanborn County State's Attorney Jeff Larson. Forensic examiners subsequently tested those remains.

On Tuesday, Larson said DNA analysis confirmed the remains belong to Prins.

Larson said criminal activity is not suspected in his death.
