A former Republican state senate candidate will serve ten years in prison for two felony counts of incest.

Joel Koskan pleaded guilty to both charges in Hughes County Court Tuesday.

“Justice has been served in this case because the victim overcame extraordinary conditions to cooperate with the prosecution,” said Attorney General Marty Jackley. “We applaud the victim for her courage and praise the difficult work of the investigators and prosecutors.”

A now widely circulated probable cause statement detailed years of child sexual abuse and surveillance. That document indicates the crimes began in 2014 when the child was 12.

Koskan has ran for legislative office in District 26 three separate times, starting in 2018. He never won an election.

Late last year, Koskan pled not guilty to exposing a minor to sexual grooming behaviors.

A judge rejected a prior plea agreement that called for no jail time and a psycho-sexual assessment.

Koskan was immediately sentenced and is now in prison.
