South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said three Huron-area law enforcement officers were justified shooting and injuring a man.

The Sept. 7 incident involved two Huron police officers and one Beadle County Sheriff’s deputy.

Jackley said the officers were called to a Huron home after a man threatened to shoot himself. When they arrived, the man exited the home armed with a shotgun. Authorities told him to drop the weapon. He eventually pointed the shotgun at the officers.

The officers opened fire, inuring the man. He was airlifted and treated at a Sioux Falls hospital. No one else was injured.

Jackley said a DCI investigation deemed the officers were justified in their actions.

“The suspect was suicidal and presented a clear and present danger to law enforcement,” Jackley said. “The officers fired only after several verbal warnings were given to the suspect who then pointed his weapon at them.”
