State Attorney General Marty Jackley warns the public about buying products or services sold door-to-door, especially in the summer months with the recent storms and flooding.
The Consumer Protection Division offers some tips if approached:
- Avoid high-pressure sales tactics; don’t rush into buying anything
- Check for ID information such as revenue licenses and proof of insurance or bond to ensure they are licensed to do business in the state
- Ask for references and check those references
- Compare prices; ask for quotes from local businesses
- Be aware of false claims
- Keep a copy of final bill or contract
- Make the final payment only after work is completed and verifying that product suppliers have been paid
- Pay by check to the business, not an individual
- Avoid on-the-spot cash payments
