SD Attorney General warns public about door-to-door sales

South Dakota Office of Attorney General

State Attorney General Marty Jackley warns the public about buying products or services sold door-to-door, especially in the summer months with the recent storms and flooding.

The Consumer Protection Division offers some tips if approached:

  • Avoid high-pressure sales tactics; don’t rush into buying anything
  • Check for ID information such as revenue licenses and proof of insurance or bond to ensure they are licensed to do business in the state
  • Ask for references and check those references
  • Compare prices; ask for quotes from local businesses
  • Be aware of false claims
  • Keep a copy of final bill or contract
  • Make the final payment only after work is completed and verifying that product suppliers have been paid
  • Pay by check to the business, not an individual
  • Avoid on-the-spot cash payments

For questions regarding door-to-door sales, contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 800-300-1986 or [email protected].
