State Department of Corrections officials said six inmates were injured at the state prison in Springfield following an incident Tuesday night and another incident Wednesday morning.
Michael Winder, a spokesperson for the department, said fighting began Tuesday night at the Mike Durfee State Prison. The inmates suffered “non-life-threatening” injuries.
In an email to SDPB, Winder also said some DOC staff “suffered minor injuries” while restoring order, but “there were no assaults on staff, no loss of facility operations, and no damage to property.”
Winder said the DOC will continue to investigate both fights and they'll refer any criminal activity to the DCI.
These incidents are the latest to occur in South Dakota’s state prison system in just a few months.
In March, at least one correctional officer was injured at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, resulting in the Attorney General filing felony charges against 11 inmates.
