One suspect is behind bars and another is sought after shots were fired at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls.
Eighteen-year-old Jaden Bingham faces two counts of aggravated assault.
Police said Bingham fired a gun at the mall Friday night during a dispute between two groups.
Investigators believe someone from the other group also had a firearm, but it’s unclear whether they fired a shot. Police are still looking for that suspect.
The shooting prompted a lockdown at the mall. No one was injured.
Lt. Aaron Nyberg of the Sioux Falls Police Department said this it wasn’t a random shooting, but rather an altercation between two groups that had an ongoing dispute.
“This doesn’t appear to be an active shooter in the sense that these people didn’t come to the mall targeting shoppers or random people at the mall,” Nyberg said. “It appears to be two groups of people that just happened to meet with each other – not necessarily even plan – they just happened to run across each other. And it happened at the mall when it’s full of shoppers around Christmastime.”
Nyberg said the shooting may have been gang-related.
