A Pine Ridge man is sentenced to a decade in federal prison after authorities say he assaulted an infant.

Sinte White Butterfly was convicted for an incident that occurred in August of last year.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office District of South Dakota said White Butterfly attacked his infant daughter while intoxicated. She was between one and two months old.

White Butterfly broke both of his daughter’s arms, legs, fractured nearly all her ribs and caused a skull fracture and brain bleed after losing his temper.

U.S. District Judge Camela Theeler said the daughter “should have been able to count on White Butterfly.” She also said the facts of the case and White Butterfly’s history of violence called for a “strong need to protect the community.”
