Attorney General Marty Jackley is announcing charges against a former Department of Social Services employee for using a grocery voucher intended for families in need.
The announcement is part of a wave of fraud cases brought against former state employees.
Jackley said the 28-year-old defendant from Brookings abused her position by using resources intended to help others for her own personal gain.
They’re charges with a misdemeanor count of obtaining assistance by fraud. Jackley said the incident occurred on Oct. 11.
The employee has since resigned.
Previously, Jackley has charged former state employees for fraud, alleging they created fake vehicle titles to secure bank loans.
The new case brings a total of five cases by the attorney general against state employees.
Jackley wants state lawmakers to update whistleblower protections for state employees.
Gov. Kristi Noem recently announced an executive order mandating ethics training for state employees.
