A former state employee has received her sentence after pleading guilty to fraud.
The 28-year-old defendant from Brookings must pay nearly $1,000 various fines and restitution.
She also received 180 days in jail, but that sentence is suspended, meaning if she pays her fines, she won’t see jail time.
According to Attorney General Marty Jackley, the suspect used a Department of Social Services grocery voucher for personal use. The vouchers are intended for families in need.
The incident occurred in October of last year.
She is one of a wave of state employees to face fraud or embezzlement charges in recent months.
“This is another example of an individual using their power to abuse their position for personal gain, hurting those in need and the reputation of hard-working state employees,” said Jackley. “The Attorney General’s Office will continue to investigate and prosecute cases to regain the public’s trust in state government.”
