The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is looking into two separate but related officer involved shootings, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
The shootings happened Tuesday. One was Sioux Falls and the other in Union County.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Samir Albaidhani, who is currently in custody.
Police said officers tried arresting Albaidhani in Sioux Falls over several warrants. Albaidhani opened fire, injuring an officer. Police fired back and wounded the suspect.
Albaidhani then stole a car and drove south on I-29. Highway Patrol troopers stopped him near Beresford, leading to another shootout. Albaidhani was again hit and taken into custody; no troopers were injured.
Albaidhani's current condition hasn't been released. The DCI is working with multiple law enforcement agencies to investigate.
Sioux Falls Police Chief John Thum said it’s the first time a city police officer has been shot by gunfire since the 1980s. He said the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening.
