The Secret Service has arrested two in connection to the theft of the bag belonging to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
Authorities say they arrested the primary suspect in Washington, D.C., and made another arrest in Miami of someone who’s believed to be a co-conspirator, the New York Times reports.
The arrests came following an investigation into who stole Noem’s bag as she ate dinner with her family on Easter Sunday.
Some of the items inside the bag included Noem’s driver’s license, passport, DHS ID badge, medication, apartment keys, blank checks, and about $3,000 in cash.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service said the defendant is a serial offender. In the meantime, law enforcement experts are raising concerns about whether the incident may have been a lapse in security for such a high-level cabinet member.
The Secret Service said they’ll maintain jurisdiction in the case and will present its findings in federal court with the United States Attorney’s Office.
Noem thanked the Secret Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a social media post over the weekend and called the primary suspect a “career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years.”
Thank you to @SecretService @ICEgov and our law enforcement partners for finding and arresting the criminal who stole my bag on Easter Sunday as I shared a meal with my family at a Washington DC restaurant.
