Over the past thirty years, first graders who have had trouble with reading have found help through the Reading Recovery program. Specially trained teachers work individually with students in daily 30 minute lessons that last for about 12 to 20 weeks.
A recent study funded by Ohio State University shows that the Reading Recovery program has had a significant impact on general reading achievement of struggling readers. The University of South Dakota trains specialists for the program in five states. USD education professor Gary Zalud directs the program and he joined Dakota Midday for more about the history and effectiveness of Reading Recovery.
