South Dakota Focus: Native American Education

Proposed changes to the social studies standards inspired Native educators, parents, students and elders to march in Pierre earlier this fall. They demanded tribal leaders be included in curriculum changes. Since then, Governor Kristi Noem has delayed the social studies revision process for a year. Hear from Crow Creek Tribal Chairman Peter Lengkeek, NDN Collective’s Education Equity Organizer Amy Sazue, and others who marched for widespread education on Native American issues.
ICYMI: Immigration in SD
It’s unclear when or if South Dakota will accept refugees from Afghanistan. Lutheran Social Services works to resettle refugees in South Dakota. Last month, host Jackie Hendry interviewed incoming President and CEO of Lutheran Social Services Rebecca Kiesow-Knudsen. They discussed refugee resettlement and the future of the organization’s work. The program also highlighted the workforce development program at the Multi-Cultural Center in Sioux Falls, which helps immigrants and all community members prepare for job interviews.
