Brookings School District superintendent to resign

At a special meeting of the Brookings School Board this week, superintendent Klint Willert announced his intention to resign.

Willert has held the position since July of 2015.

“It is with apprehension I submit my resignation as the Brookings School District Superintendent of Schools position, effective June 2, 2023," Willert said. "While this resignation is unconventional, it is what is deemed concurrent with the current school board members goals for the district.”

The accreditation of the district is currently “on probation” by the Department of Education.

School board president Keli Books said she first learned of the accreditation issue during the March 10 board meeting. She did not say whether this played a role in Willert stepping down.

The board accepted Willert’s resignation and then formally began the process for hiring a replacement.
