The University of South Dakota expanded their simulation center for health care students, the Parry Center for Clinical Skills and Simulation, by 2,800 square feet.
The Sioux Falls center simulates medical environments, such as operating rooms, so students can practice in situations that feel real without posing a risk to patients. Instead, specialized manikins act as patients.
“There’s no better way to learn than to be able to sort of simulate an experience before the stakes are high," USD President Sheila Gestring said. "You can make a mistake in a simulation center and the stakes are not that high. You have that opportunity to learn. So, I think it’s absolutely critical to public health, but also to our students.”
Some of the additions include an intensive care unit, complete operating room and a post anesthesia care unit.
According to Gestring, nursing and medical students will work together in these environments. USD said this helps students learn teamwork skills.
