The Sioux Falls School District Superintendent is retiring at the end of the school year.
Jane Stavem has been an educator for 36 years; the last five of which she served as Superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District.
“I’m looking forward to the next chapter, I hope to continue to do something related to education but maybe not with the same intensity that is required in this role. I also lost both of my parents over the last year and a half, and I think that that always changes your lens when you lose significant people in your life and life is short. There are times when you just feel like you want to be able to do some other things and enjoy life in maybe a little bit different way,” said Stavem.
Stavem said she is announcing her retirement early to provide the board time to find a replacement. She hopes the next superintendent focuses on obtaining highly effective teachers at every level. She said this will always be an issue in education.
Carly Reiter is the Sioux Falls School Board President. She said Stavem has made a difference in the district.
“When you have a leader change you usually look for somebody who has the skills that we need at that time. I feel like we are so blessed to have had the instructional guidance and curriculum guidance that we have had for the last five years. That next person, I don’t think that we have identified what that person needs to have, but that’ll be conversations we have as a board,” said Reiter.
Stavem will continue to serve as Superintendent until the end of this school year. She said she plans to stay in the Sioux Falls area.
