An understanding of government and its functions may be a requirement for college graduation in South Dakota soon.
The state Board of Regents approved a civics education requirement at their most recent meeting.
Officials say it’s designed to encourage long-term civil engagement among students and will not increase the credit hours needed to graduate.
“The goal is to develop well-rounded individuals who possess the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to navigate and contribute to our democracy and local communities,” said Board of Regents Executive Director Nathan Lukkes.
