State Historical Society essay contest open for entries

The state Historical Society is now accepting entries for the “This Place Matters” essay contest.

It’s open now through March 14.

The contest prompts students to write about any South Dakota location that’s at least 50 years old, why its their favorite place, and why it should be preserved. The place they choose does not need to be a historic site and students do not need to write a full history of the location.

It’s open to any fourth grade student in the state — public, private or homeschooled.

Each entry will be judged on quality of writing, content and theme, and originality of thought. Historical Society leaders say they’ll award cash prizes for first-, second-, and third-place winners as well as a one-year family membership to the society.

The contest is part of South Dakota Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month in May.

The Historical Society will notify winners on or before April 11.

Learn more and access the entry form here. For questions contact (605) 773-2907 or email [email protected].
