Winter Type Weather Moving Through Parts Of South Dakota

After several weeks of above normal temperatures, strong winter weather is forecast for parts of South Dakota this weekend.  Kelly Sair is with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen.

“Today there’s a Winter Weather Advisory for this quick-moving system that’s moving across South Dakota—expecting amounts of two to four inches, with locally heavier amounts possible.  Today with this system, winds aren’t really going to be an issue; the real hazard is going to be slippery roads and reduced visibility due to moderate snow.  The next system that’s coming in Saturday and Sunday is a stronger system.  There is a possibility for heavier snow amounts, especially across north central and northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota, says Sair.  Right now amounts are still uncertain—but we’re looking at four to six inches, with possible heavier amounts across that area.”

Sair says once the storms pass, winds will pick up and make travel hazardous due to blowing snow.
