The high temperatures of late summer continue as a heat advisory goes into effect today and continues into the evening hours for areas of the state. The regions affected range from south central South Dakota all the way up through the Missouri River Valley into north central South Dakota. Heat indexes are expected to be in the 100 to 105 degree range.
Todd Heitkamp is with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. He says this heat advisory is pretty normal.
"When you compare that to the last heat outbreak that we had a couple of weeks ago this one’s not going to be near as long-lasting as what the previous one was," says Heitkamp. "It’s fairly rare to have this type of heat in this time of year in September however we have had it before. So this is just going to be a quick shot of the heat and we just want to make sure people are aware of it."
Heitkamp recommends staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the entire day and into the upcoming weekend.
