There is a second case of Chronic Wasting Disease in free-ranging deer or elk east of the Missouri River. The latest detection is in Buffalo County, in the middle of the state.
State officials have confirmed the disease in 19 counties so far. Officials are modifying carcass transportation and disposal regulations for the entire state. The goal is stopping the spread of the disease.
Chronic Wasting Disease is a fatal brain disease in deer, elk and moose caused by abnormal proteins. Most infected animals appear healthy at first and display no signs.
Late-stage infections show weight loss, behavioral changes, excessive salivation, and loss of muscle control. The disease is always fatal for the animal.
