South Dakota is experiencing a heat wave, according to the National Weather Service.
Peter Rogers, a warning coordinator meteorologist with the Sioux Falls office, said during the next couple of days, the heat index will approach 100 degrees West River and remain in the mid-to-upper 90s East River.
Later this week, however, he temperatures could increase to 100 or more in the east.
He advised paying attention to the weather all week, even if it seems to cool down.
“The highest level of heat is expected to be middle portion of the week. As we get into the latter half of the week and into next weekend, temperatures do look like they're going to come down a tad, but we don't want people to let down their guard," Rogers said. "Just because temperatures are coming down a little bit doesn't mean that they still couldn't be impacted. So, I would say people need to be on guard throughout this entire upcoming work week.”
The National Weather Service says to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activities during excessive heat. Children and pets should not be left in parked cars.
Infants, the elderly, pregnant people and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable to heat.
