Black-footed ferret chasing a prairie dog, which is the majority of the diet for a wild black-footed ferret.

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

A couple times a year, Angela Jarding heads to the grasslands in the middle of the night. She and other scientists are working to find and trap black-footed ferrets.

This species is so endangered that it was once thought to be extinct. Now, it's slowly coming back along with its main food source: prairie dogs.

We ask Jarding about the conservation efforts helping bring back the ferret and the important ecological niche they fill on the prairie.

Jarding is a wildlife biologist at Wind Cave National Park.
