State officials said they're preparing for several river systems in southeast South Dakota to crest Monday or Tuesday following days of heavy rain.
Gov. Kristi Noem gave an update on flood conditions at a press conference Saturday morning. She said the James River is expected to crest Monday or Tuesday at at 25.1 feet. The Vermillion River is expected to crest Tuesday morning at 30 feet. Officials expect the Big Sioux River to crest Tuesday at 38.4 feet - which, if reached, would be a record for the river.
The region saw consistent rainfall Thursday through Saturday morning. Noem said the community of Canton received over 18 inches. Mitchell, Chamberlain and Sioux Falls each saw over seven inches of rain.
The rain has resulted in many flooded homes and businesses in the area. Noem said anyone experiencing flood damage should contact their insurance agency.
No deaths have been reported in connection to the flooding, Noem said, though it has resulted in a few injuries.
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken also spoke at the briefing. He said the heavy rains have put pressure on the city's wastewater system, saying it is the "most strained the system has ever been."
TenHaken asked residents to limit activities that add excess wastewater to the system over the weekend. That includes things like showering or running the dishwasher.
Meantime, several roads in the area remain closed Saturday due to flooding, according to the Department of Transportation's road conditions map.
SD DPS, in collaboration with Governor Noem and the Dept. of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ state geologist, are closely monitoring current and projected rainfall and river flows in SE SD using advanced computerized modeling.
