Emerald ash borer spreads to Brookings County

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources confirmed the emerald ash borer has spread to Brookings County.

The emerald ash borer is a beetle that feeds on the North American ash tree. It has killed millions of ash trees in the country since it entered in the early 2000s.

The department expanded a plant pest quarantine to Brookings County to fight further spread. Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner and Union counties are already under the quarantine.

People in those counties are prohibited from moving firewood and ash materials to other counties.
