More than150 firefighters are responding to a fire burning in southwestern South Dakota.

The Bennett Fire is approximately 330 acres in size. It’s burning about eight miles northwest of Edgemont, in Fall River County.

The fire started around 1:00 pm on Thursday and is burning in the Black Hills National Forest.

Officials say lightning caused the fire, which is not contained.

Crews are working to keep the fire west of road 319, east of road 380 and south and east of Bennett Canyon Road. In a statement, Forest Service officials say firefighters will implement a combination of direct and indirect strategies for full suppression, while providing for firefighter and public safety.

Managers are monitoring fire behavior, the terrain and weather forecasts.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible throughout western South Dakota this weekend, as temperatures could reach the upper 90’s.
