The University of South Dakota is part of a project developing sustainable refrigerants.
The U.S. National Science Foundation is funding the $26 million project to help address climate change.
The Environmental Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub is bringing together the University of Kansas, University of Notre Dame, University of Maryland, University of Hawaii, Lehigh University and USD to create an Engineering Research Center.
Project organizers say most current refrigerants are hydrofluorocarbons, which account for nearly 8% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.
USD says both undergraduate and graduate students are contributing to the research project.
