For many South Dakotans, pitching a tent or pulling up a camper on one of South Dakota's public campgrounds is a lifesyle.

The Black Hills National Forest is looking for public comment on proposed changes for its off-season recreation fees.

Under the proposal, off-season day-use and picnic site fees would increase from $0 to $5 and off-season campgrounds would be set at $15.

Officials say usage at day-use and campground sites have increased significantly, resulting in an increased need for maintenance and supplies.

The comment period ends Nov. 29.

Comments should be directed to the Black Hills National Forest via e-mail or via mail:

Attention: Bradley Block – Recreation Program Manager
1019 N. 5th Street
Custer, SD 57730

Comments can also be provided online at the park's website.

Oral comments must be provided in person at the Black Hills National Forest to Bradley Block during normal business hours or by calling 605-673-9200.

The Black Hills National Forest Advisory Board and Wyoming Recreation Action Team will review the changes and provide recommendations for the final decision. If approved, changes take effect fall of 2025.
