Geese deaths at Lake Byron 'likely' avian flu, officials say

Authorities say avian flu is likely the cause of a large wave of geese deaths at a lake near Huron.

Over the past week, thousands of geese have washed up on the shore of Lake Byron.

Game, Fish and Parks officials say the die-off is likely a result of bird flu. That’s the same disease impacting poultry farms across the country, causing the price of eggs to spike.

GF&P staff are working with area residents to clean up and dispose of the animals.

Officials recommend avoiding handling these carcasses without protective gear such as rubber gloves or masks.

NPR reports avian flu is impacting wildlife around the world.
