The U.S. Drought Monitor released March 27, 2025 showing conditions in South Dakota

Drought conditions are persisting across South Dakota.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows the entire state is facing moderate drought or worse. This time last year, only eight percent of the state was under this category.

Over 60 percent of the state is rated as “severe” drought.

Nearly 10 percent of South Dakota is categorized as “extreme” drought, with those conditions centered in the southwestern corner of the state.
