A West River health-care provider is moving forward with $120 million worth of construction projects to serve the growing Black Hills-area population.

Monument Health will add a $40 million addition to the hospital in Rapid City for babies, children and mothers. It will include a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The three-story building is planned at the northwest corner of the hospital, across the campus from the Cancer Care Institute expansion.

Plans for the multi-year renovation are in the design stages. Dave Ellenbecker is the vice president of facilities management and operations. He says despite setbacks with the COVID-19 pandemic, the project can’t afford to slow down.

“We are challenged no different than anybody in terms of supply chain materials being delayed, but our community is growing at a rate that we have to also grow,” Ellenbecker said.

In Spearfish, Monument Health plans to expand Spearfish Hospital and add a new multispecialty clinic.

The Spearfish projects are expected to be completed in the next two to three years at a cost of $80 million.
