VA psychologist talks veterans and mental health

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Veterans are often exposed to trauma that civilians won't experience.

Kari Leiting, PhD, does clinical work at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Leiting sat down with Lori Walsh on In The Moment in honor of PTSD Awareness Month. They discussed PTSD among veterans and available treatments including psychotherapy and medication.

Leiting said recovery looks different for everyone, but having the tools to cope with day-to-day stressors can help reduce the struggle of PTSD.

The VA has PTSD resources available on their website. The National Institute of Mental Health also has information and resources for PTSD. Anyone in crisis can dial 988 or veterans can dial 988 and then 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.
