South Dakota receives $1.9 million as part of another settlement with drug manufacturers, according to Attorney General Marty Jackley.
This time, the payment is from Janssen Pharmaceuticals—the pharmaceutical arm of Johnson & Johnson.
In 2021, Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay states more than $5 billion over a nine-year period for its role in fueling the opioid crisis.
With the latest payment, the state has received more than half of the $9.3 million expected from Janssen.
The funds go into the National Opioid Settlement Fund administered by the South Dakota Department of Social Services.
South Dakota is expecting to receive nearly $80 million from Big Pharma companies in total—all of which Jackley said will be used for addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery.
