Black Hills Railroads

Train in the Black Hills

The 1880s saw a boom in rail line construction in and around the Black Hills. The first lines were narrow gauge and mainly served the needs of the local community businesses, especially those involved in mining and timber harvesting. By the early 1900s, the railroads were the main mode of transportation and travel.

This video describes the rapid rise of rail infrastructure in and around the Black Hills, with an emphasis on the northern Black Hills, including Lead and Deadwood.
