70 Year's Ago: Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps

Follow @Nate_WekSDPB

It’s been more than 70 years since most of the Nazi concentration camps were liberated. Almost 18%, over one million, of the Jewish people killed during the Holocaust died at Auschwitz in Poland.

Here’s a video, courtesy of BBC News, showing what Auschwitz looks like today.

Anne Frank and her sister Margot are thought to have died of typhus just months before the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen death camp, which is thought to have killed 70,000 people during its two-year tenure of operation.

The Frank’s became well known after Anne’s diary was found and published, explaining her day-to-day life of avoiding the Nazi’s in hiding. Her family, the Van Pels family, and Fritz Pfeffer were found in Amsterdam on August 4, 1944 hiding in a secret Annex.

Otto Frank, Anne's father, discussed her diary in 1967.

Over six million Jewish people lost their lives during the Holocaust, and even though it was over 70 years ago, the stories of it will continue to live on.
