A national nonprofit organization thanks former President Donald Trump for releasing a South Dakota woman from prison.
One of the clemency requests Trump approved in his final days in office went to Lavonne Roach. She’s a 56-year-old Lakota woman from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Roach served 23 years of a 30-year sentence for a nonviolent drug-conspiracy crime. Now she's leaving prison early.
Several individuals and organizations including a non-profit called CAN-DO submitted letters on Roach’s behalf. Roach’s prosecutor, Pennington County State’s Attorney Mark Vargo, also submitted a letter.
Roach plans to live with her daughter in California.
