Nonprofit Expects Food Insecurity To Continue After The Pandemic

Food Insecurity

A South Dakota nonprofit official says food insecurity will continue after the pandemic.

Matt Gassen is the CEO of Feeding South Dakota. He recently spoke to the Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary Club.

“The numbers that we talk about back in March a year ago to where we are today to what is that going to look like in the future – I can tell you, experience tells me that we’re going to be dealing with a significant increase in the number of people seeking food assistance far beyond the pandemic. The economic impact that this pandemic had on the lives of families is going to go long beyond the pandemic itself.”

Feeding South Dakota changed its operations during the pandemic. The nonprofit closed fixed food pantries to focus on mobile food distribution.

The organization now serves up to 20,000 households per month at distribution events in more than 120 communities.
