South Dakota has joined a multi-state lawsuit. The suit aims to stop federal regulators from factoring the social cost of carbon emissions into policy decisions.
President Biden signed an executive order in January that established a working group to assess the social cost of greenhouse gases.
Governor Kristi Noem and others in the suit argue the order is unconstitutional. They say it would slow the economy and over-burden the American people.
Danielle Fugere is the president of As You Sow, a nonprofit focusing on corporate activism. She says businesses should oppose the lawsuit and support better carbon policy.
“Because as climate change occurs, it impacts every company globally. It makes it much more difficult to maintain business.”
Fugere says investors and banks are watching companies to see if they adapt or ignore climate change.
Besides South Dakota, ten states have joined the lawsuit against the federal government.
