The Crazy Horse Memorial recently added 44 more flags to its Tribal Flags Collection. And memorial officials are still looking for more.
There are 574 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. The Indian Museum of North America at the Crazy Horse Memorial has 138 flags in its collection.
Andrew Dunehoo is the museum curator and director of cultural affairs. He says the flags are an important part of the museum’s collection.
“It’s a symbol of pride, a symbol of representation, a symbol of belonging. A statement to make. Just you know the various tribes of people that have given to us it’s a way that they can see that visual symbol of who they are and where they come from.”
All 138 flags are on display for the first time this year. They’re located in the Cultural Center and covered porch at the Crazy Horse Memorial.
