U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, is working with the Problem Solvers Caucus on an infrastructure plan.
“Every single highway bill we’ve passed into law has been passed with lots of Democrat and lots of Republican votes,” Johnson said.
“The bills have always been negotiated with those folks sitting at the table on the very first day. We’ve gotten away from that and the problem solvers are trying to put that genie back in the bottle.”
The caucus has more than 50 members with equal party representation. Johnson is a Republican. He said the caucus proposal is focused on traditional infrastructure items like roads and bridges. The group has been working with senators as well.
The caucus is proposing a $1.2 trillion plan for the next eight years. That’s more spending than Johnson supports, but less than a $2.3 trillion plan from the Biden administration.
Infrastructure will be paid for by gas taxes, borrowing or corporate taxes.
