State Universities Collaborate To Teach Kids About Land Use

Grassland
Grassland in central South Dakota.

Several universities are collaborating to educate children about land uses.

The three institutions are the University of South Dakota, Montana State University and the University of Wyoming. They have created “Land Use Explorer” kits to teach children about where they live.

Meghann Jarchow is an associate professor of sustainability at USD. She says it’s important to teach kids about the land.

“Making sure we have conversations about, you know, what do we have now? What did we have in the past, what might we like to have in the future so we have a more informed public about, you know, being able to have conversations about the trade-offs because, you know, you can't have every land use be beneficial for everything.”

The kits include lessons on food production, natural energy systems and what lives on the land.

Youth organizations can apply for Land Use Explorer kits by June 21st. Applications are available on the Montana State University website
