Travel is increasing as the pandemic winds down. The Better Business Bureau says travel scams are also on the rise.
Jessie Schmidt is the South Dakota state director for the BBB. She says scams happen more often when demand is high for rental properties and rental cars.
“Rentals are expensive and there’s a scarcity and that’s what scammers love in the markets. So, they love that uncertainty so that’s kind of where they swoop in.”
Scammers pose as a rental owner and get consumers’ bank information to steal from them.
Schmidt says travelers should research the owner’s online history and read their reviews. Travelers should also stay on trustworthy rental websites instead of going through a private source.
“Don’t get anxious because at that point in time we have a tendency to make some bad decisions. So, take your time, communicate through the established platforms. Your chances of a better experience are far better if you stay on the traditional means and the traditional platforms.”
Schmidt says travelers who suspect fraud should report it to police, and to the Better Business Bureau scam tracker online.
