Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern is in hospice care.
Ann McGovern, the Senator’s daughter, says her father is coming to the end of his life.
Last year in Mitchell McGovern addressed a crowd of college students and professors about his first job in politics in South Dakota and all the work he did to increase the number of Democrats in the state.
“I wore out three cars completely, not brand new ones three second hand ones I covered every county not once but a dozen times,” says McGovern.
McGovern went on to represent South Dakota in the U.S. House from 1957 to 1961 and in the U.S. Senate from 1963 to 1981. In 1972 he won the Democratic presidential nomination and later lost that race to President Richard Nixon in a landslide. Nixon later resigned amid the Watergate scandal.
His daughter Ann McGovern says her father moved to the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
