The South Dakota House Transportation Committee killed legislation that allows road-kill animals to be kept by the person who hit it. State Representative Mary Duvall opposes the bill. She says this piece of legislation was rushed.
“I would encourage everyone to step back, take a deep breath. Lets look at this issue in more depth and if there are specific problems; let’s come back next year with a fix for them and not a hastily amended bill in committee,” says Duvall.
Duvall says there are too many unanswered questions. She says more research in the matter could lead to future legislation. The bill was dismissed eleven votes to two. Supporters say $280 thousand dollars was spent in 2012 by the state for picking up dead animals and this legislation could save some money.
