The Red Cross is responding to a series of thunderstorms that damaged homes on the Rosebud Reservation on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Tennis ball sized hail and wind gusts over 70-mph tore up siding and broke out windows on several homes. Localized flooding also overtopped dams and damaged roads.
Dan Kuecker is with the Red Cross. He is now on-site assisting in disaster recovery.
“The damage was very widespread. It covers several square miles. It’s into actually parts of Bennett County as well in addition to the Rosebud Reservation here in Todd County. And so, we have two Red Cross teams on the ground here that are going neighborhood to neighborhood and region to region to make sure that we’ve made contact with folks that might have been affected. We’re working very, very closely with the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Authorities,” says Kuecker.
Keucker says everyone who evacuated last night has since returned to their homes. He says The Red Cross is not providing immediate shelter – rather assisting families with needs as they repair the damage.
